Casa's port from my hotel balcony

Before I went to Casablanca, I thought it sounded impossibly exotic and sophisticated. I was unduly influenced by the movie--it is nothing of the sort. If anything, I think Tangier is the city that most resembles the Casablanca of the movie. But the real Casa doesn't impress many people. It has one star tourist/cultural attraction: a beautiful mosque that is one of just a couple in the country open to non-Muslims. Apart from that, there are a handful of decaying art deco buildings with interesting facades and very little else. In fact, in the city of one million people, there isn't even a public library. So once you've checked out the mosque and done a short walking tour, the only thing left is to wait for one's flight out of the airport. (Hmm, actually that does bear SOME resemblance to the movie, I guess....).

Casa does have an active port, and you can see part of it from this picture, taken from my hotel the morning of my departure.
