One More Thing About Agadir
I should have pointed out that I learned a key fact about Agadir which may explain a lot of why I find the city so charmless and lacking in soul. The town was basically obliterated by a massive earthquake in 1960. It destroyed nearly all of the buildings and killed 15,000 people. That's why there are no older buildings and why the structures now are ugly, flat, square cinderblock. It's a horrible tragedy and does shed some new light on the place--it wasn't an aesthetic choice, it was a consequence of a disaster. Even though Agadir wasn't to my taste, I am so glad that the people there have been able to reestablish a thriving city in the wake of such terrible devastation. That really speaks well of the city's spirit.
